Smoked duck breast, Norwegian crackers and more baby goats!
Yes, April can be cruel in terms of wild fluctuations in temperature, but it is also a period of renewal..., and great activity on the farm! Our farmers our working longer hours preparing for the spring and early summer bounty they will start bringing to market soon.
Until then, bask in the end of winter market greens, such as leafy spinach which is looking beautiful right now. Grab some for easy salads but also to wilt and use as a bed for this cod with caper orange sauce. If you make this refreshing spinach salad you find all the ingredients (save for the walnuts) at the market. Add some sourdough miche from L'Imprimerie and you're set for a nice Sunday lunch.
Also, make sure to pick up some "spring ritual" fiddlehead ferns from Tivoli Farm. Fleetingly delicious, these fern fronds taste great sautéed, steamed or broiled. Toss them in some fresh pasta from La Trafila. With spring our vendor ranks begin to swell. We won't be at full capacity until June 6th, when the market returns to a weekly schedule, but some of our summer vendors come out of hiding in April, such as Daniel of Larchmont Charcuterie who returns with his fabulous charcuterie and smoked duck breast. Ditto for Hedwig, maker of those extraordinary Norwegian crisp breads. I highly recommend trying them with some of Pura Vida’s smoked salmon, and a dollop of labneh or plain yogurt from White Moustache or Sugar Shack Creamery and some of the fresh dill available at The Titusville Farm tent right now.
The knife sharpener is here this week so make sure to bring Matt your pruning shears as this is likely to be a gardening weekend. The Orchards of Concklin will have more pansies in a panoply of colors.
Yes, Sugar Shack Creamery will return with product this week and yes, more baby goats which were such a hit at the last market. Honestly, if you did not get a chance to hold one in your arms, please make a point of doing that this week. As many a shopper told me, it's the therapy you didn't know you needed.
I have some very sad news to share with you, our market family. On Monday, March 27th, our market manager, Rebecca’s husband, Nelson, passed away unexpectedly. It’s unlikely you’ve met him since his market appearances were very early in the morning when he would drop Rebecca off at the market and the two of them would set up the market tent together at 7 a.m. Of course, if that doesn’t tell you what kind of loving husband Nelson was, you’d know it the minute Rebecca mentioned his name and her face would light up. Rebecca will step away from the market for a while until she’s ready to return. We look forward to seeing her smiling face at the market tent again, until then, please join me in sending her some market love.
See you at the market!
