Now we're just showin' of
Some neighbors around the corner from my house posted a sign on the tree by their front door this week:
“Friends and Neighbors: Come by on June 13 from x tp x to help us celebrate our 55th Wedding Anniversary”. I love our little Hastings community so much. Our vendors tell us all the time how special the Hastings shoppers are: food savvy, yes, but mostly kind and caring and generous in all the ways. This week, we can't wait to introduce three new vendors to our community and vice versa.
Let’s start with Black Girl Kimchi, who puts a Southern twist on a Korean classic. Think: collard green and okra kimchi and Jerk bok-choy kimchi. Ever since we lost our kimchi vendor after COVID we’ve been looking for a replacement and we are so glad to bring Onika Oyagbemi into our market fold.
Next up: Zeena Bakery specializes in Levantine cuisine includingmuhammara (a flavorful Middle Eastern dip from Aleppo, Syria, made from roasted red peppers, walnuts, and breadcrumbs, with a signature sweet-tart flavor from pomegranate molasses and spices like cumin and Aleppo pepper) focaccia bread speckled with Za’atar spices and Ducca spices, ka’ik al quds or Jerusalem sesame bread and finally, those amazing maamoul and barazek cookies. We told Zeena she would be a very good fit for Hastings indeed. Prove us right!
The Hudson Valley is experiencing a wine renaissance of sorts (thank you climate change?) so we want to reflect that in our vendor line-up. This week we're super excited to welcome Neverstill Wine to our market. This award-winning winery in the Finger Lakes region is run by an all-women team. It takes its name from the brackish Hudson River, originally dubbed by the indigenous community “the water that is never still.” You can read more about the winery and their très cool wine tasting salon in Hudson, NY here.
Pretzel Boy — sourdough pretzels as big as your head are also here for the first time. It’s a good week to be New York- proud. (Speaking of...we’ll be celebrating Pride month at the market next week)
Shuck NY has already been here once before but the cold wet weather was not conducive to oysters on the half shell so you may have missed them. That’s right, you can now cozy up to the “raw bar” in the parking lot for some Wellfleets and Blue Points on the half shell with a bright squeeze of lemon. If only you could open that bottle of Neverstill Wines Chenin Blanc to enjoy with them!
Finally, Boogie Down Bronx Honey. Sean Flynn is a top security official at the United Nations by day and a Bee Guy every other waking minute. He has hives all over the Bronx, including in his apartment windows. You may recognize him from the documentary, “Keeper” about his love of bees, the Bronx and his desire to change the image of his native borough.
Saturday also marks the long-awaited return of Painted Goat Farm with their exquisite line of French-style goat cheeses, their goat milk, yogurt and let's not forget their halloumi which you can crisp up for this salad with dates and arugula.
Also returning this week, Larchmont Charcuterie who will be here weekly, Wil-Hi Farm for all things lamb (with so many beautiful heads of spring lettuce at the market, why not make these with lamb lettuce wraps? Plus, North Winds Lavender Farm for all your lavender needs, from scones to sachets.
There should be plenty of rhubarb at the market this week. Need some rhubarb inspo? Check out this sweet collection of delicious-rhubarb-recipes.
Maybe you can bring a rhubarb crisp to that party around the corner.
See you at the market!
