last weekly farmers market of the season...come spend some time with us
...and what a season we've had! Sandy aside, we were blessed with a string of fair-weather Saturdays. This summer, we were very happy to be able to bring food stamps to the market for the first time.We also brought you some great new vendors: Old Chatham Brewery (beer in growlers, hard cider and root beer), Coach Farm goat cheeses (have you tried the triple cream???) and Gaia's Breath Farm, another bio-dynamic farm specializing in veal, pork and charcuterie. You'll be happy to know that all three will be sticking with us for the winter season. Teaves Tea Co., also new, will return next spring. By popular demand, the Hastings Farmers Market will be coming to you TWICE a month this winter - the second and fourth Saturday of each month from December through May. We will be going back and forth from the Library lot (December, April and May) and the Community Center (in January, February and March). It's confusing, so please pick up a schedule at the market tent tomorrow to post on your fridge and help you keep it straight! Tomorrow we have a couple of first-time visiting vendors: Andre Kreft, from Savor, will be selling his prettily-packaged savory & sweet cookies. They are no bigger than a quarter and they come in the most unusual flavors like birch, maple and cranberry and lemon, rosemary or roasted leek (!). Pick up a couple packages as a hostess gift if you are guesting this Thanksgiving - a tasty conversation starter. Christine Seidl-Bartel will be selling her boutique savory jams like onion, apple & thyme, pear & cardamom and fig with port. These should make a lovely addition to the Thanskgiving table - and certainly to any turkey sandwich next weekend. You should be able to find most everything for your stuffing and sides from brussel sprouts, to kale to butternut squash. Don't forget Tierra Farms nuts for your salads, stuffings and pies. You can pre-order pies at the Pie Lady of Nyack (www.pielady.com). But they will have plenty on hand in case you don't get around to it today. If properly stored, the pies will keep until Thanksgiving, so don't sweat it.
RUBY REILLY (and ukelele) will perform from 10:30 to 12:30.
If you find that you can't get everything you need for the holiday at Saturday's market, keep in mind that there will be another farmers market in Irvington on Wednesday, Nov. 21st from 1 to 5 p.m. If you ordered a turkey from Gaia's Breath (or Stone Barns) you can pick it up there. It will be in the auditorium of the Main St. School. at 101 Main St. We will have some new vendors there, including Wright's Farm & Orchard which will also have hand-scratch pies and pickled dilly beans. Flourish will also be making a special appearance.
Thank you for supporting our market. It's no small feat putting it on every week and many volunteers work hard (and wake up mighty early) to make it happen. Seeing how much pleasure you take in shopping there makes it all worth it.
