The Heart of Food

Zest. It's something distinctive, invigorating, and can brighten a dull day or a bland dish. Zest is flavor and character, spark and spirit. It's what Edmond "Eddie" Le Draoulec, who passed away earlier this week after a long illness, had in spades and lavished on his daughter, who spreads it around in kind. Pascale is in California with her mother and sister, and expects to be back in Hastings in a few days.

A personal essay she wrote about her father — proud, impeccable waiter, charming raconteur, sterling family man — was published in Saveur magazine a few years ago. In her reading of the piece, recorded for NPR's "The Splendid Table," discover the essence of human affection and the heart of Pascale's food — and farmers' market — story.
