February 2nd Market News

Whether you're hosting, attending, or sitting out the Big Game on Sunday, the market is your go-to for party (or protest) provisions. Several vendors are having Super Bowl specials— Stone and Thistle Farm is giving away awesome hot sauce with a purchase of three bags of wings. Want to make your own sauce? Try this recipe from Smitten Kitchen, which originally came to our attention viaSouthtown Farms instagram page-he used it on his pork ribs in lieu of wings and it worked just as good.

Thinking of putting together a charcuterie platter? Start out with cured meats fromMangalitsa. Add an assortment of cheeses fromCooperstown like their Tomo Primo, sliced carrots fromSun Sprout, and fingerling potatoes from Black Creek along with MOMO's slightly spicy edamame dip. Surround it all with thickly cut slices ofBien Cuit miche—you can even slather some withMcGrath's queso fresco and topped with thinly sliced pickles from the Doc for a fresh take on the toast craze.

Saturday is a new market holiday: Volunteer Appreciation Day! If you see someone you know who volunteers for the market—say thank you!

Lastly, because of the government shutdown, SNAP recipients have been told to stretch their benefits through the month of February. As a result, our neighbors who receive this supplement will be relying heavily on the Village’s food pantry to feed their families. One way to help is to bring canned goods and other non-perishables, which have not expired, to the market table and we will deliver them downstairs to the pantry. Here is what is needed:

Rice
Canned beans (all varieties)
Oatmeal
Pancake mix/syrup
Lunch box snacks ( juice boxes, cookies, crackers, granola, etc)
Canned potatoes
Peanut butter/jelly
Canned meats (ham, tuna, chicken)
Canned fruits
Canned soups (all varieties)
Seasoning packets (sazon, taco, chili, spaghetti sauce etc)

The Youth Advocate’s office says: Thank you! Every donation is truly appreciated by the families we serve.
